Onigiri Making and High School Girls: Revenge Part 1

“Ha? Onigiri?”

“Un, Onigiri.”

The time goes back to a few days before the sports festival.

Hiyori Kotsubaki tilted her head in confusion when her best friend, Mahiru Asahi, told her so on the way home from school.

“You want to make it in our house…?”

“Un.
Just on the morning of the Sports Festival.
Is it a no?”

“No, I don’t mind, but…why Onigiri again? Do you want to bring them for lunch?”

“U-Un, That’s right, that’s not all…”

The girl's cheeks are slightly stained as she wriggles her fingertips together.
“…H–Hmm?” Hiyori said so after seeing that gesture, which is not often shown by a girl who’s usually so energetic.

“Well, you want Yamori-san to eat it, don't you? That Onigiri I mean.”

“…! How did you know!? Hiyori-chan, don't tell me you're an esper!?”

“I guess I was right.
I know that much.
I can only think of one reason why you would go out of your way to ask me to do something like that…I mean, you really like him, don't you?”

“Su–!? I-I-I don’t like him! N-No, of course, I like him, but I don't like him romantically, It’s just that I’m indebted to him!”

Hiyori never mentioned “Romance,” but her babbling about it only adds to the suspicion that she does.

(…Well, it's not hard to see why she's so fond of him.)

The next-door neighbor, a college student named Yamori Yuu, whom she calls “Onii-san.” The young man does not look like much from the outside, but he must be very special to Mahiru.

He’s not just a school friend or a teacher, but a neighbor who helps a girl who lives alone away from her parents, and who cares about her in some way.

Although Mahiru’s more independent than she appears, she’s still a 15-year-old girl just like Hiyori and the others.
She has never had an adult nearby to rely on, so the presence of that young man has probably saved her life.
Perhaps more so than Hiyori thinks.

“But, can you make Onigiri? You can’t even put potatoes on a curry, you know?”

“Uugh…! I-It’s fine! I've been practicing every day for a while now!”

“Practice…? Ahh, did you learn how to make it from Yamori-san?”

“Ah, un! When Onii-san first started teaching me, he couldn't even make them…but recently he started making them with me, and he's gotten really good at it…”

“He's learning up faster than you are…By the way, have you learned to make them well yet?”

“…….”

“Guess I don’t have to ask.”

Hiyori muttered to the clumsy girl, who silently and gently turned her face away, with a subtly distant look in her eyes.

“Y-You’re wrong! I mean, sometimes I can make them, but not all of the time…”

“What are the odds?”

“T-There's a 50% chance that it will be delicious…”

“So about half of them fail.”

It's quite a feat that she fails half the time with Onigiri, which is a simple dish to make….No, Hiyori knows that she can’t make fun of her because she really doesn’t know how to cook…

“…Even so, you really want Yamori-san to eat it, don’t you?”

“…Un…”

This time, she neither denies nor blushes, but simply gives a small nod.

“…I want Onii-san to eat the Onigiri’s I made…”

“…I see.”

Hearing her best friend's straightforward words, Hiyori thought that It can’t be helped.

“I understand.
But then, You’ll have to work harder to make it better before the day of the event.”

“…! H-Hiyori-chan…!”

Mahiru hugged her with tears in her eyes as if she was overwhelmed with emotion, and said, “Thank you, I love you!”

While holding her in her arms, the girl who was her best friend just showed a troubled smile.
